A case of the missing Betty Poppins

~Betty~
Shhhh…….can you hear that? It’s the sound of relief or tears from many, many Mommies sending their kiddos back to school today.
I happen to fall into the relief category. That’s right, I’m one of those Moms. It has nothing to do with my daughters and everything to do with me. The older I get, the more I need the predictable schedule of their school hours. I need that space of time between 7:45 a.m and 3:00 p.m. that is all about focus and getting things accomplished.
Being a summer slacker looses it’s luster after awhile and I’ve been feeling the need for an actual schedule creeping around the edges this last month. Thats utterly boring to admit so I shall blame age, responsibility, life and obligations for losing my carefree spirit. Damn adulthood anyway.
A week, or so ago (without schedule time tends to fold into and over itself), I was chatting with one of my daughters about Motherhood. She would like 4 children. A Boy first and then any combination of boy or girl after that until she fulfils the desired 2 boy-2 girl quota. As a Grandma to be, I’m all over those numbers. The more the merrier I say.

Daughter: I’m not sure what type of Mother I’ll be.
Me: Well, you’ll either be a bit like I’ve been or because of the type of Mom I’ve been, you’ll run to the other side and be a Betty Poppins Mom.
Daughter: What Is A Betty Poppins Mom??
Me: Oh you know, the sort of Mom I’ve never been. 1/2 Betty Crocker and 1/2 Mary Poppins. Cupcakes and a spoon full of sugar and all that.
Daughter: Ohhhhhh–well, ummm
Me: Darlin, we both know I’ve never been one of those Moms and I’m Mom enough to admit it. Hopefully it isn’t a genetic thing so maybe your kids will have a chance.
Daughter: Maybe!
Me: You should know though, I totally plan on being the Anna Osbourne Grandma. And if you’re wondering what that is I’ll tell you. It’s 1/2 my Mother Anna and her amazing Grandma skills, plus 1/2 Sharon Osbourne and her rockin wacky ways. You’re kids are gonna love me as a Grandma so make sure and have lots and lots of them.

I’ve already told my daughter her kids would be spoiled. She ended up glancing at me in consternation and saying, “You NEVER spoiled me.”
“This is different – you I was responsible for.” I said.
“That makes no sense.”
“Sure it does. I can give sweets to your kids and send them home with a sugar rush and not deal with the by product of giving them whatever they want. Better yet I can give them the loudest – noisiest gadgets and send them home with those as well.”
“Ok, I get the sugar rush…but the toys? You’re deaf!”
“I know that’s what makes it so sweet and totally evil.”
By this time I got the customary eye roll. Hehehe! Oh yeah, grandkids would be sweet. If I have to endure being called grandma, at the very least I plan to have fun with it. (Hugs)
P.S. Skye’s husband is officially out of Iraq and should be stateside in a week or so.

I read once “If I knew grandkids would be this much fun I’d have had them first.” I am so ready to be ‘that’ person and not the ‘mean mommie’ – hehe (but no rush really)

This is the first year that I am not sending one of my boys off the school. My oldest is in college but he is living on his own. My youngest starts trade school in December. Enjoy Rebecca.

An Anna Osbourne grandma…I can totally see that!
I’m almost ashamed to admit that sometimes I have to look at the computer to see what day it is. Not always, just sometimes. I kind of like it, though, and don’t really want a schedule. I am definitely anti-schedule.

Ah, yes, my high school sophmore started school yesterday as well. I like when there’s a set schedule again in part as it makes visitation scheduled easier, and she’s home more. Well, with me more, did I say home? She’s in activities, so not sure how often we’re HOME. I like the make corn muffins and cupcakes I’ll frost and decorate stuff, but generally speaking, not sure any of these celebrities describe me. It is interesting to note how each generation parents, taking the good and nixing what they perceive as bad, and likely throwing in some of their own good and bad, too. I love being a pseudo-grandma to my boyfriends three grandsons:) but I’ll wait a long time for my 15 year old to have kids.
So far, so good with school. Custody and visitation angst is rearing up for silly reasons, but school seems good!
I’m going to be a grandma soon too! My first biological granddaughter will arrive in October – I think I’ll be a pretty cool grandma *teehee*

I love your Anna Osbourne comment!
I do get sad the first week my older two kids are gone, but after that I love the schedule. I get nothing done in the summer!
This was fun, though I suspect such conversations are harder with boys. Came here from drey.
